Overcoming Shyness Part 3: Have Patience and a Plan.
Trying to change your behaviour or habits can often be a very frustrating exercise. After a few days your initial motivation and excitement can start to fade and will power often fails just when you need it most. It is much better to rely on a plan, than will-power alone. Having a plan allows you to have the big picture in mind, but focus on the day-to-day steps and successes.
Patience is also key to your success. If you have been successfully shy for some years (or decades) it may take some time to overcome. Don’t be discouraged if it doesn’t happen as fast as you would like. Continue to take active steps forward and you will get there.
Planning and patience can both help if you have a setback. If you try the next step in your plan and it doesn’t work out, first take some time to regroup and work out what went wrong. Then decide whether you want to try again (with adjustments if necessary) or consider the idea that you moved ahead to fast and need some more practice on the previous step. Some steps will take longer, have patience as you work through them.
