Introverts and Non-Vebal Communication
There are differences in the non-verbal communication of introverts and extroverts. Because social interaction can quickly overwhelm introverts, they instinctively reduce eye contact while talking to preserve energy. This contrasts to extroverts who are incigorated by such interaction, so increase eye contact while talking.
Introverts accumulate new information and process it during conversations, which result in less expressive facial expressions and this may give the appearance of disinterest, when in fact they are just listening. Contrasting with extroverts, who are more animated in their facial expressions as extroverts ‘show’ their enthusiasm, the opposite of introverts who generally keep their enthusiasm to themselves.
In addition, introverts may speak more softly and more slowly than extroverts. Which, from an extroverts point of view the introvert appears, quiet and shy.
