5 Things you can do to reduce shyness

The next time you are going out try these five ideas to help reduce shyness and your boost confidence.

  1. 1. Plan your questions.  These can be used as conversation starters or to help keep the conversation following and this is great in helping to prevent any awkward pause.  Current events are great for this, have a look online or a look at the paper for some topics ideas.  And of course the weather is the old favourite, but I prefer to avoid using the weather as a topic unless of course there has been some kind of weather extreme
  2. 2. Plan your answers.  One of the problems I often en-counted was ‘what do I say?’ and the panic that this would causes.   I now take the time before going out to plan answers to common questions, such as ‘What field of work are you in?’  ‘What do you get up to in your spare time?’  or ‘Tell me about yourself?’
  3. 3. Wear comfortable clothes you look great in.  This can give you an instant confidence boost.  And what could be a better way to start!
  4. 4. Know where you are going and what you are doing.  In the event of a work function, it helps to know where you are am going, who else will be there, what the overall plan is etc.  By knowing this you feel more control over the situation and this can help you relax a little.
  5. 5. Have a way out.  This tip certainly helps me.  Just by knowing that if you really need to you can leave and get home quickly you can feel safer and you are more likely to relax and enjoy yourself. But as you feel more comfortable in social situations try and push yourself just a little more each time, until your shyness is no longer a problem.

Great tips. I’m going to try and ‘prepare your answers’ for the wedding I have coming up. I’m only going to know half the guests, so I will let you know how it goes.
